Juniper
Essence
Lavender and juniper oils
are current in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia
for the treatment of rheumatic pain applied
topically.
Juniper essence imparts a scent of
violets to urine.

 |
| rosemary |
Elixir
of Youth
The spirit of rosemary (the elixir
of youth was reputedly obtained by distilling
cedar, rosemary and turpentine) used
to carry the name 'Water of the Queen of Hungary'
(1370). It is supposed to have transformed
paralytic, gout - ridden septuagenarian princess
into a seductive girl whose hand was sought
in marriage by a king of Poland. |

Rheumatic
Remedy
The Egyptian first introduced coriander
to Europe and in the 18th century it was
cultivated in the region of Paris. Coriander
oil is now successfully used in lotions
and ointments for rheumatic pain.

| vetivert |
Oil
of Tranquility
In India the essential oil of vetivert
is still used to scent cotton cloth (in the
same way as patchouli) to protect it
from moth. The warm earthy, slightly musky
scent has a soothing and relaxing effect.
Due to its calming and uplifting qualities
the oil is known as 'oil of tranquility'. |
